I always hear the term clan elder but who are they? What are their influence on somalia? Does each clan have a single clan elder standing at the throne? What is their role? Are they the product of a old period in time I.E the era of sultanates. How long do they go back? How did they get the position clan elder? Are they above the politicians in involvement of Somalia or they subservient to them.

I have many questions as i never truly cared about somali politics until i got older.

every clan has a standing suldaan /islaan/beeldaaje/garaad (these are only a few titles, there are more). Laakin they’re more of a ceremonial figure, they’re highly respected though.

*When I say “clan” think of Abgaal, Habar Awal, Dhulbahante, etc. Darood, Hawiye, and Isaaq are tribes not clans.

People really only obey their subclan elders, for example the elder of your subclan of Ogadeen or your subclan of Xawaadle.

Within a subclan there are multiple elders but the main one is signified with the “guud” title and represents the entire subclan politically. For example, this is the Suldaanka Guud of Reer Biciidyahan a subclan within Majeerteen.

Does all the sub clan elders form a union for the respective clan.

Kind of but not really, they’re all responsible for their own subclans. Someone’s elders would be the leader of their “Reer”, then their subclan elders, then the elder of their clan.

Hoe do they have responsbility? Wouldn't the government have responsibility over its citizens? Wouldn't it be problematic that these clan elders have power over people which the government cannot regulate. Or do they work with the clan elders.

Everyone knows their elders & should definitely know their elder if they're FKDing. Infact in certain states you have to bring your Caaqil/elder just to prove you are native to get citizenship.

The states where Somalis reside have the aspect of Xeer (customary legal system) which is clan based and functions under the supervision of the clan elders and is typically implemented along side civil law and Islamic law.
