Why is there no update with the mou deal?

We are literally vey close to one year when the mou deal caused a buzz (a cringe one at that) yet no new information has developed with the case. Why drag it on for so long unless you know no such deal will occur.

It was dead on arrival, Abiy underestimated EU/US reaction and Arab league unity.

Yeah it's defo a dead deal. At least we won't have a plague of them entering Somaliland.

There will likely be closer cooperation between SL and Ethiopia even without a formal MOU depending on who wins this election. However, Ethiopia's financial limitations mean they can offer little beyond military training, and they prefer to maintain the status quo. A more unified Somali political presence would not be in their interest, particularly given their ongoing conflict with the Amhara. It will be interesting to see how Cirro navigates these dynamics if he wins.

SR in Ethiopia is prospering very well at the moment, in terms of industrial and farming, especially in the Fafaan woreda.

at most they could have diverted their trade to berbera port, is it because they don’t have any money for the infrastructure they need to put or do they think it would empower the somali region if that amount of trade flow goes through their territory

It was never about trade, they wanted access to the sea, the UAE and Israel would have paid for their port, and the Yahuuds always operated via their agents. The British tried to give Northern Somali including the SR to Yahuuds to form Israeli state in the past, but they rejected stating the Somalis would kill them.

Them having a base in the red sea would be advantageous to counter Iranian influence on the opposite side, but it be suicide for any SL leader to make an agreement directly, so in comes Ethiopia backed by UAE oil money.
