Among the 32 Americans who have been chosen as Rhodes Scholars to pursue post-graduate studies at Oxford University in England is Ahmed M. Ahmed. The Rhodes Trust announced the scholars-elect for 2017 on Sunday. Naming Ahmed M. Ahmed as a pursuant for a master’s degree in research in organic and medical chemistry at Oxford.
Ahmed is a first-generation Somali immigrant whose family emigrated to the U.S. from a Kenyan refugee camp. From his profile as a Student Advisor for Chemistry at Cornell University it reads.
“Ahmed “is involved with Ho-Nun-De-Kah, Cornell Tradition and Golden Key. He is also a SWAG mentor and a Habitat volunteer. He has worked as a research assistant in the Coates Group. He loves to play basketball and spend time with his friends and roommates. His favorite class is Intro to Cellular Physiology (BIOAP 3160).

Ahmed is currently a senior at Cornell University majoring in biology. He has tutored students in organic and general chemistry and has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.
Rhodes Scholars are chosen in a two-stage process. First, applicants must be endorsed by their college or university. This year scholars-elect were chosen from 882 applicants who were endorsed by 311 colleges and universities. The scholarships cover all expenses for two or three years of study at Oxford starting next October. Applicants are chosen on the basis of the criteria set down in the Will of Cecil Rhodes. These criteria are first, academic excellence. This is a critical but only threshold condition. A Rhodes Scholar should also have great personal energy, ambition for impact, and an ability to work with others and to achieve one’s goals.
