So i was reading this dissertation by Timothy Powers and the history of the red sea and his argument about the establishment of islamic cities along the sudanese coast and Eritrea get me thinking about Zeylac.
it seems that Aydhab and Badi on the sudanese coast were build by the Rashidun to counter ethiopian piracy and stymied ethiopian aggression agains the Rashidun. it seem that Caliphs took active measure to protect the red sea against the Abyssinians. some time later Dahlak island was also colonized by the muslim and during the abbasid it was a penal colony like Australia. so this got me think either Zeylac is not as old as somalis believe and if it was build during the 1st generation of muslim it purpose may have been as a military colony.
