I think of it this way. I have a train going on a trail I've set up. This train will not stop running no matter what. However, whoever is interested in joining this train can come along for the ride, and leave as easily as they came in. Nothing they do will disturb the path of this train, as the trail set is as stable and solid as it was before they came on and after they came on.
You could think of the train/trail to represent your career, your lifestyle, hobbies and different life choices you've made for yourself. I hope everyone has a train like this before they get into a relationship or you'll end up as a passenger with no way to get back to his/her destination.
