A dutch guy goes to the Somali owned shopping mall in Eastleigh and compares it to other malls in Nairobi:

I came across this video that someone linked me and i looked through his account. I found it to be revealing.

Basically this guy from the Netherlands is an expat in Kenya and he goes to different malls and markets and reviews them and uses them evaluate economic growth and middle class in any given area.

He went to Somali owned mall in Eastleigh the BBS mall which is the largest one he describes it as the most clean, organized, open, spacious and busy mall he has been to in Kenya, with no vancies or empty shops. This is a mall hat has more than 3,500 shops, 3 hospitals, 32 restaurants, 12 banks, a 7-Star hotel, 364 toilets, and 2,200 packing spaces.

There is a number of things i learned from this:

1) Somalis in Eastleigh/Nairobi have a larger middle class

2) They have more purchasing power and disposable income

3) They can afford to rent and set up shop

I am also showing this to debunk @AbrahamFreedom nonsense peddling about how Somalis benefit from the business climate in other East African countries when in reality they are the ones generating that business activity and driving it. It also shows how hard working Somalis are.

Also just as a reminder because i know you people foam over the mouth at this and try to imply people don't invest in Somalia and run to other countries to succeed when you see Somalis create economic opportunities for themselves in where they live abroad.

But the truth of the matter is that they invest more into Somali regions than they do in other countries.

If I'm not mistaken, the Dahab Marina project was scrapped, and Dahabshill backed out of it. The project was later reintroduced as Xeebta-Luulka, though I'm not sure why. Since its announcement that construction would begin, I haven't seen any evidence of ongoing development for this project. I've lost count of how many times this project has been restarted. There's something fishy about it, which is probably why Dahabshill backed out. On the other hand, you can talk about the new airport and port

I don't think it was crapped because there are routine progress videos, they might have gotten more Somali investors on board. This one is from august 2024.


But yeah i am against the HSM and his government building expensive mega projects , he should focus on industry and basic infrastructure building, social or affordable housing and other services for the citizens kinda like what Cagjar is doing in Ogaden after taxing and drawing investment.

The video maker seems confused, he's mixing up two different projects. He created the video around the same time Xeebta Luulka was announced. It’s the exact same project. They’ve only changed the name and no longer mention Dahabshill because they’re no longer part of it. Dahab Marina Beach was announced in early 2022, but there has been zero progress since then.

But this here is exciting too

If you live in America particularly the southern sites it’s so easy to start a business the land is cheap and plentiful taxes low plus state legislatures pass laws incentivizing the development of small business

This stuff always makes me happy and angry at the same time . Through out history our people have been either nomads , merchants or both. Business is ingrained in Somali culture and we are good at it both inside somalia and abroad. Business requires law and order + security to thrive , if we just had security in Somalia business would boom. It's already booming without security and law , imagine Mogadishu without terroristic threat and with the stability of an average east African country like Kenya or Uganda , I'm not saying we would be like Dubai but probably close to it in a few decades

That's probably true , I have no other reason to explain it. I know relatives who have extended families in Europe (Sweden, Denmark, UK etc) and some others who stayed in Africa (Kenya , South Africa, Uganda ) or Arab countries ( Saudi , UAE, Qatar) . The ones in Africa and the Gulf do 10 times better economically than the ones in the west , same socio economic status before the war in Somalia (mostly poor and reer baadiye origin) , same family, same upbringing the only difference is the country in which they settled after leaving Somalia. If you see western countries with less widespread government subsidies and with smaller Somali communities like Ireland , Italy , Switzerland etc somalis tend to do better economically and there are no gangster wannabes among the second generation.
