When in Rome do as the Romans do. I've lived in the Gulf and Gulf Somalis truly identify with Somalia being an Arab nation and that is what Arabs in the Gulf are taught as well. Somalis there benefit from being seen as Arab, even if they know deep down they damn well aren't, but it doesn’t make sense for you to expect a Somali from the Arab world to fight the label, when life is easier for them when people think they are.

No, in Arab countries they are taught that Somalis are indeed an Arab nation. Whenever I told them we weren't Arab and that I can't speak Arabic, I was always met with confusion and i'd have to give a mini history lesson. I've even been in situations in which other Khaleejis thought I didn't speak Arabic because I was Westernized and 'whitewashed' from living in the West and i'd be given a lecture of the importance of knowing Arabic like I was some sort of selfhater. Believe me when I tell you, they truly think Somalia is an Arab country and that is what is taught in schools there.

Being 'Arab' and what is seen as an Arab is a lot more complicated in the Arab world. It isn't like the West. North Sudanese are seen as only black in the West, but in the Arab world, they're also seen as staunchly Arab and are known for that in the Arab world, despite being dark. How could they not be? Their culture, language and even history is an Arab one. Yet they're also clearly African.
You also have black Khaleejis who are blantantly originally from Africa, yet they're treated the same as any other ethnic Gulf Arab. Overall, in the Arab world, it isn't one or the other. You can be black and Arab, African and Arab ect. It is the West that is obsessed with categorization and that has this mentality that you're only one and not the other.
What you need to also remember is that most Arabs apart from the Gulf ones are mostly of Arabised origins. They too aren't real Arabs and have become 'Arab' due to the Islamic Empire, the exact same way as Sudan.

Being Arab isn't an ethnicity but a political and linguistic grouping nowadays. Hence, why Somalia, in my opinion, is an Arab country but Somalis are not Arab people.
I kinda disagree with Somalia being an Arab country and it has nothing to do with us being African or black. We don't speak Arabic as a first language. A lot can't speak it. If Arabic was our first lang or at least a language everyone spoke, then I would say that not only is Somalia an Arab nation, but we too are Arab since the real factor from looking at other Arab nations history is really only speaking Arabic.
However, I have no issues with Somalis in the Arab world saying they're an Arab country in order to benefit and politically we are and our culture is very similar
The reason I make the distinction between the people and the country is simple. Somalia's main export and import partners are Arabs, our government's main financiers are Arab, our government is in the Arab political sphere in that anything that happens in the Arab world has an effect in Somalia.
Furthermore, Arabic was historically a major language in Somalia as recently as the 1970s. It used to be the language of Somali print media and academia for centuries. It used to be the language of instruction in elementary school in both Italian and British Somaliland.
However, Somalis are not ethnically Arab and most Somalis do not speak it. However, in the future as we develop, more will. More Somalis will learn Arabic for educational, economic or religious opportunities as its the language of our next door neighbours.
Therefore, I would say Somalia is an Arab country but Somalis aren't Arab.
If I’m in the gulf I’ll identify as Arab.
In North America I’ll identify as black to get extra privileges. I’m Somali nonetheless but I’m flexible with my identity
Neither subsaharan nor africa is an ethnic name, these are names of places where different races live in, so I think its even much more embarrassing to claim youre related to subsaharan blacks when naighboring subsaharan ethnicities have only one thing in common which is considering somalis as occupiers and illegal settlers, go to ethiopia or kenya and see if you are equally african as the hundreds of different ethnicities living there
