When in Rome do as the Romans do. I've lived in the Gulf and Gulf Somalis truly identify with Somalia being an Arab nation and that is what Arabs in the Gulf are taught as well. Somalis there benefit from being seen as Arab, even if they know deep down they damn well aren't, but it doesn’t make sense for you to expect a Somali from the Arab world to fight the label, when life is easier for them when people think they are.

I have cousins in the Middle East, they tell me only Boomer & older Millennial Somalis identify as Arab, younger generations are more likely not to. He also told me that in the Gulf it's a rigid hierarchy with Arabs on top, they laugh at Somalis and others who claim Arab, essentially calling them posers behind closed doors.

Countries and cultures that have been influenced by Arabs have all incorporated Arabic words to varying degrees.

I was recently surprised to find out that certain words I assumed were Dinka are actually Arabic words.

somali is half arabic and is just like darija

• quraa3 (quraac) - breakfast
• Qadaa' (qado) - lunch
• 3asha' (casho) - dinner

breakfast lunch and dinner are all arabic. somalis speak an arabic dialect

Somalis aren't technically arab since most somalis don't speak arabic although our culture is similar not to mention we are in the arab league. But so what if somalis in MENA identify as Arab? it makes sense since they speak arabic there and would have adopted their culture.

If they adapt the culture and the custom they’re part of the community.

Somali is an ethnicity so their identity would be be very pronounce through their blood, language and descent.

Arab identity is similar to a Latino identity: it comes from a cultural identity not ethnical.
