It wasn't a local and that won't happen.

What do you mean?

@Sophisticate since you have connections to that region. Is it really getting to the point that freedom of expression is at a zero tolerance?

Or are Somalis stirring the pot. I can’t trust Somali ‘news’ sources

What a sad tragic story, a young man with a promising future, killed cold blooded and you've idiots laughing and fighting in this thread. My stomach hurts from reading the articles who are not all on the same page. AUN to the young man, may he find a home in the highest jannah.

Who kills someone because of dispute? That officer should be buried the same day as the deceased, there's no ifs or buts.

His poor mother, imagine dying in a foreign place with no family around and dying around ajnabis with no mercy in their hearts, my heart aches for him.

I think this is disgusting. Who shoots a student let alone over a dispute? Some of you must be kidding to downgrade this to the severity of an 'accident.' AUN to the brother. I know that some embellishments to the story have occurred such as the image and account of what the victim was wearing. However, its challenging for individuals to dislodge recent events in that region from their mind. Naturally, questions and even connections will start to come up. Such as, why has this occurrence happened in tandem with other events in that region? Namely, individuals who were locked up for Somalia memorabilia and paid flag burning protesters. In addition, is this an isolated incident and a matter of an unhinged trigger happy and psychotic officer? Or is this to set the stage to change the narrative and portray Awdal as an inhospitable place rather than what it's been for the better part of two decades; which is a safe haven and beacon of learning for students across Somali weyne.
exactly awdal was always known as the home of somaliweyn with students coming from across the penninusla something is fishy and I am glad you caught on

Mentally ill people in Somalia don't use meds and are undiagnosed. Some of them could be in the police.

There are a lot of crazies among Somalis, especially in Somalia.

Somalis have an interesting take on authority. They only recognize absolute authority with violence as the main tool. I wouldn’t jump to this man being insane but it isn’t far fetched.

There needs to be a criminal trial for this officer with full transparency.

This is Somaliland's moment to show the world that it has a transparent and equitable legal system. I do not want this issue buried for a month then a press release saying he has been found guilty.

I want to know what happens throughout this prosecution process.

Warning: Not making a qabiilist insult here. This applies for all police in Somalia.

But to answer your question, qaad is a big reason with why police act the way they do in Somalia. Many officers spend long hours sitting at a checkpoint on shifts and chew qaad to pass the time. This makes them extra paranoid and trigger happy whenever a situation occurs.

It’s weird and disturbing how lack of freedom of expression is normalized if it’s ‘your side’.

Even during Kacaan’s height this level of suppression wasn’t seen.

I hope this story is sensationalized.

What a load of ahistorical bullshit.

Wow, the level of lying people are capable of.

During the kacaan, routine torture simply to "investigate" if people were guilty of "subversive" acts was carried out as a par for the course. People had their testicles electrocuted, were sleep deprived for days on end, had boiling water thrown on them as they slept, and a ton worse. These were just those that were "suspected".
From it's very 1970 foundation, the NSS' main responsibility was to do just that. People only started to publicly speak about it decades later, for fear of reprisals against their families.

Somaliland has a long way to go before it lives up to your kacaan "ideals'. Simply arresting people for actually breaking the law just wont do.

I know officers can be power hungry (everywhere in the world) with some that have temperaments of loose cannons. However, this sort of stuff doesn't normally happen. Even guards usually keep their cool. Anyway, I hope the kid receives justice. He did not deserve this and hopefully it teaches people that this sort of behaviour is intolerable. I still think calling it an accident attempts to diminish it and the life of the one it stole.
Awdal? I thought he was killed in Somaliland.

@Sophisticate are awdal and somaliland the same? :what1:

Yes; I heard the dispute with the officer happened in Borama. He was a student of Amoud University. It's very sad that it happened there. AUN to the brother and Sabr Iyo Iman for his family. He looked so young.

I know that the accused officer wasn't from there but I don't like that it happened at all, let alone in Borama/Amoud and to a student especially one who was away from home. I understand this is an exceptional case but I hope this doesn't cause students to question their safety in and around the area.

The report of this being an accident was only just initially as the story broke, as that was how it was being reported early on. I don't think anyone was calling it an accident to diminish what happened.

Very quickly, we had more accurate reports explaining that this was a dispute between the guard and the student gone horribly wrong. This includes video of all the relevant authorities and community elders confirming that course of events. The guard has been arrested on suspicion of
murder at this point.

AUN to the young kid and Sabr iyo Imaan to his family.
