Any rational human being would accept that the universe had a beginning at some definite point of time. The inferences that can be made from this hypothesis is where atheists and theists differ. Theists infer that a Creator must have done it and atheists see no reason why it didn't arise spontaneously. Even though it's counter-intuitive to think that something can't rationally come from nothing but there is no law of nature that states that what's counter-intuitive to us, shouldn't happen. To prove that God exists is impossible because we can't observe something that comes from nothing. It only happened once.
