Off topic, but does anyone know why Somalis call the ruling party muxaafid? Is the because the Conservatives were usually the ones in government?

Muxaafid means you are with the ones in power. Mucaarad being the opposition.

That is one meaning among several. It comes from the trilateral root h-f-d. It means to conserve, protect, memorize. In this political context it means staying with the party in power or being with/supporting them.
