Why didn’t Somalis assimilate afars in the past or even during the Adal wars? They have a small population of 3 million and a large landmass on the Red Sea. Considering historical animosity why didn’t we expand into their territories and occupy at least until Assab. Have we lost Red Sea territory due to embellish expansion or wha cuz it don’t make sense

Afar live in even drier land than us, and were primarily salt traders, who traded with us, this is how they became Muslim, it was mostly the Isa that fought with them since they bordered them.

Most of Afar live in a desolate area that's dry with no resources other than rock salt called the ''Danakil Depression''. There is no economic motivation for Somalis to migrate there n mass.

Why would we expand into a desert region that looks like this?

Somalis did assimilate some afar. And the reverse happened also. Our societies were intertwined. But no large-scale Somali migration to the Danakil ever happened because Somalis simply saw no use in the land. There's no reason to leave semi arid land suitable for Agro-pastoralist societies, to a volcanic wasteland.

Afars live in a harsh environment, that's why they constantly try to occupy Somali regions such as Sitti which is very good for livestock etc.

I head they have a lot of people who act like muse bihiya, they switch sides too easily with éthiopian. Due to aidtiopian wantings to blur the line whats a éthiopian whats a afar. This only happened once a afarian is tough the aidtiopian language.

Afar are strong warriors even with their small population. No way Somalis could fully assimilate them.

Somalis migrated to Eritrea on different occasions during Ahmed Gragns raid of Abbessinia, he raided Medri Bahri (Eritrea) too. During 19th and 20th, Somali settled to Eritrea peacefully as the there wasn’t any ongoing battle between us.

during Italian rule in Eritrea, many Somalis migrated to
Eritrea even had the own quarter in Asmara.

But that's far from saying why they didn't assimilate Afars or claiming Eritrean Afar territory.

The Afars have their own language and culture, their own clans, they own Sultans. They were not subjugated by the Adal empire so assimilating them is impossible. They were rather allies of Adal and they were part of the Aussa sultanate.

Adals presence in Medri Bahri Eritrea or Dankalia (south east) was too short to assimilate them considering that Mehdri Bahri Eritrea fought back against Adal and pushed out the Adalite troops of the Eritrean highlands and northern red sea region.

But in Ethiopia Adals forced went much deeper gained much more territories and controlled more lands.

You dont need to subjugate to assimilate, Just look today in fact that is the worst way to assimilate you do it peacefully like in America. Adals presence was not short they were there for a while fighting the portugese its only until the gurey died thats when it started rolling back. But even with that, thats not the only time as you mentioned somalis have been slowly settling there for centuries not just eritrea but ethiopia too. You must keep in mind that back then oromos were insiginifcant and far out west. Afars have their own language and culture, their language is the closest to somali and their culture has lots of influence from ours, more then the habesha culture which has been propagated in recent times with menelik..

There are no evidences that Ahmed Gragns raid on Eritrea was for long time.

Gragn fought in Eritrea against Eritreans, he lost live there. Unfortunately although our ppl have close relations. I can’t support this part of the history. But I don’t want to bring up. I did only because of OP.

Abessinia were your enemies but Adal fought Eritreans who never harmed Somalis. And many Eritrean civilians died.

Afars are the own tribe they have their own culture language customs and sultans. U cannot assimilate them against your will.

I always show out for Somalis but if Somalis do the same things that the expansionist Ethiopians, then they aren’t better.

the only force there were conquering Eritrea on long term were the ottmans, they stayed in Eritrea from 1557-19th, followed by Egyptian khedivites

The massacres Canfar (and the ENDF) committed against Ciise in Garba Ciise and Cadayti were brutal. 500 civilians killed back in July 2021. Canfarta waa iney meel iska mariyaan.

It would be difficult to assimilate the Canfar, they can definitely hold their own against their neighbors. Anyways, it would be sad to the Canfar people disappear. I’m sure they have a rich, beautiful culture and history. I love their traditional dress and headpieces. Let them file their teeth in peace.
