Afar assimilation

Ahmed Gurey tried, but it didn’t work. Generally we weren’t centralised enough to act on these sorts of things any expansion/assimilation was clan based.

It won’t work now too, Afar are divided by 3 countries, but I’ve always been a big advocate of Somali centralisation some time in the future and making deals with the Afar/Oromo/Saho. They’re our buffer against expansionism

Peace between Afars and Somalis is vital for both. Both share one faith, both share culture and history.

this is the picture of Eritrean Navy General Hummad Karikare meeting Somali President Hassan Sheikh during Hassan sheiks trip to Eritrea in 2022. Hummad Karikatur is Eritrean Afar. He was the pioneer of the Eritrean Navy, governed southern Eritrea, Denkalia and he liberated the Afar of Ethiopia during TPLFs of the Afar region in 2021-2022

both were brothers

when Hummad passed a way this year, many Somalis even here on SSpot send their condolences

Afars didnt pose much of a threat compared to ethiopian highlanders who were raiding us many times also not to mention the fact they were held off by one subclan and the border status quo remained that way until today. I think the only reason for the short occupation of eritrean coast till suakin was to restrict ethiopias sea access and not really focusing on centralising power there 🤷‍♂️.

Thats not true. You can look at Somali expansion/reconquest into Tana and Juba, it was multi clan based and organized during the 1800s and the clans in a certain area would bring in other clans for supports, some times they would bring in certain clans to develop farm land or grazing areas, and other clans to develop the coastal trade.

Most of it was cordinated and initiated by two centralized entities the Bardheere Emirate and Majerteen sultanate. I suspect the the eritrea coastal migration were in realities trade colonies connect to the latter

Same goes for the migration into and coversion of Bale in the late 1700s which was multi clanal and cordinated by Harar Amir and they would build mosque there as well. The Oromos and others there just assimilated into Somalis.

Ahmed Gurey did try and it did work and its explained in details in Futuh and he apointed people to govern each area, but most of it was reversed due the involvement of the Portuguese that restored Ethiopian presence.

Also this was ongoing thing, that happened before Ahmed Gurey where Awdal Sultans would conquer land and resettle a bunch of Somalis and appoint them as governors

Text on how Sultan Badlay ''' Camped a thousand Muslim families there'' in one of the southwestern territories.

This is just a detailed example a century before Futuh , you see similar things play out all over Futuh resettling nomadic and agro-pastoral families into conquered territories and appointing them as governor garrisons.

This is how the whole of Showa and large parts of Awash became Somali when the Awfat Sultans conquered it, it just became inhabited by various Somali agro-pastoral clans. They would resettle thousands of us.

Why would ciise want to occupy a land that literally has nothing on it.
View attachment 346634

Ciise were moving into fertile Hararghe during the Adal empire instead.

One thing i have learned recently, is that Cisse are split into two camps. The Black Cisse (Cisse Madobe) and The White Cisse (Cisse Cadde)

The black and white refers to the colour of the soil they each inhabit.

I am in the process of writing out a future geography video, i spoke about briefly to @Aseer about it. It will cover most of the Somali inhabited areas also replace the nonsense misconceptions that is out there about it

Most of Somalia is actually not a sandy desert which is what most people imagine it to be, outside of the a few coastal plains, it's actually just shrubs/grasslands, savannas, rain forests and tropical woodlands. It has a very diverse landscape. Which is why Somalis engage in diverse economic subsistence activities.

Also Somalis have dense population clusters in certain areas while other areas remain sparsely inhabited.

Mentioned it a bit, in this thread using Spain as an example:

Afars live in a harsh environment, that's why they constantly try to occupy Somali regions such as Sitti which is very good for livestock etc.

It is more political. The Ethiopian government has been pushing them and arming them, they want Ethiopians in control of the major roads/route to Djibouti and want it distanced from Somalis. They do not trust Somalis and know we will eventually break away and want to secure it for Ethiopia.

So it is the federal government that arms and support them to try to annex land from Somalis, whenever Somalis fight back and take their land back the ethiopian government and its military pushes the Somalis back and asks for peace, then they push the Afar to displace the Somalis again, it is a cycle. Afars alone cant do anything.

Here is a recent short documentary from the Sitti region:

They get smoked every time its not even something worth focusing on. if the afars cant beat one subclan what do you think will happen if they face a entire clan or more.
