This is shocking to say the least. If .So is now the 7th nation with the largest farming land in Africa, and we bring DDS & NFD into the fold, that would make Somali territories 3rd or 4th largest in the whole continent. Add that, .So has the longest coast line in Africa.

Agriculture doesn't mean farming crops alone, pastoralism is technically agriculture as well. Land dedicated to grazing animals is agricultural land.

lol, this is a recent thing. The Biimaal imported slaves from Zanj coast in the 17th century(they fought the Italians to keep slavery in the south), The North did practice slavery but to a much lesser extent, usually selling slaves in Zeila that the Ethiopian sold to the trade caravans.

Somalis are not pure pastoralists but agropastoralists; we worked our land and occasionally with indentured Oromo prisoners of war, usually women and young kids, who eventually got absorbed and married into the clan (women only). For example, in the Shinille zon,e the Gadabuursi, Gurgura and Hawiye practice agropastoralism but the Cisse who live in the more arid regions there are pure pastoralists, so segments of Somali society view it with disdain, but even within the same clans, you will have both.

How is a minority with no political and economic power supposed to help feed the nation? Do Somalis not even care about becoming food independent or do we want to live off US food aid for the next 50 years?

I don’t know what this man is saying because majority of them time Somali’s are the ones feeding themselves and farming. And it’s been like that for many centuries. Maybe some parts might be different but from where I’m from they do everything themselves including agriculture production.

When it comes to arable land fit for crop production ours is about equal to Haiti. Vast majority of that land is pasture for pastrolism.

Good news is the fact that we probably can make vast tracks of land suited for crop cultivation with proper planning.
