I mean the US has been bombing them on a near daily basis for the past few years and that hasn’t reduced their attacks or strength at all. Al shabaab clearly has greater ambitions and won’t go away. We should ask questions like “why do citizens prefer them over the internationally recognized government?” Maybe because al shabaab’s courts provide justice for citizens? They even do zakat drives and offer justice and social services in tons of ways the government can’t. It’s the same story as Afghanistan, the government over there is just as corrupt as Somalia, and they rape little boys, so why would villagers not side with the taliban? I don’t know why negotiations haven’t started yet if the Afghani government can have civil negotiations with a group like the Taliban.
