Americans make the best coaches for Somali Athletes

Mal Whitfield trained Somali athletes in the early 70s and they ended up winning gold medals at the All-Africa Games in Lagos and the East African Games in Nairobi.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar coached the Somali Basketball Team at one point and they eventually earned a Bronze medal at the 1981 FIBA Africa Championship in Mogadishu ranking above current heavyweights like Tunisia and Algeria;

If you look at the end of this video you can see World Champion Abdi Bile with his coach John Cooke;

Film Idea;

Will Smith plays Mal Whitfield, who was called crazy for thinking he could achieve success training Somali athletes. They end up winning multiple gold medals, a great set up for an against the odds story like Remember the Titans or Coach Carter;

Qasim from Tik Tok plays one of the Somali Athletes. His casting is meant to neutralise a certain actor, who I will not name, whose shadow is still lingering heavily above our heads;

Jamad plays his supportive wife;

CGI has progressed so much that a computer generated and acccurate version of 1970s Mogadishu and its stadiums can be used for wide shots;

I love the vision ❤️

Maybe you should consider screenwriting sports dramas yourself, walaal.

I don't think you need to go to film school to make a script come to life.

I remember watching "Cool Runnings" with my dad that had a similar premise of a Canadian coach that had perfect chemistry with an aspiring Jamaican bobsled team that showed potential for greatness but didn't know how to harness it. I'll always look back at that film fondly and I feel like this is the type of content Somali directors need to tap into, it's got universal, multi-generational appeal.

Awesome idea. I would watch this dozens of times. Agree with @DojaKhat that you should write it.

Cool Runnings definitely has that tropical vibe that reminds you of prewar beachfront Somalia. That movie was hilarious when we were kids, but I was thinking more along the lines of Adam Sandler in Hustle, now that’s an amazing sports drama.

Haven't heard of that one, but I'll be sure to check it out.
