I've said this before and i will say it again, SL is nothing more than a glorified port. we suffer from amnexia but last year when the 1) garacad seaport was completed everyone was cheering in puntland, as 2) Mogdishu and 3) Kismayo ports started getting ramped up, everyone in somalia was cheering. but the truth of the matter is for the last 30 years the only region in Somalia that was incentivized by the civil war and instability was SL. 4) djibouti is internationally certified to slaughter meat for export to the Arabian peninsula, why? because they have abattoirs that are certified for meat butchering that can actually be exported. Somaliland has abattoirs but none of those are certified for exporting to Arabian peninsula. and with the issue with LA, no self respecting Darood Geeljire is sending his livestock to SL.
what did we learn? 1) SL has too much competition from other ports, 2) they have lost market share from livestock exports due to LA, and 3) SL isn't allowed to export butchered meat to Arabian peninsula.
what was SL solution for a long time? import arms for AS to keep the south destabilized, and outside of livestock they exported raw materials illegally from AS slave mines or from random Somali warlords.
In conclusion, SL isolated themselves at the risk of their fellow Somalis, instead of working with the south, they used their status as the "stable region of Somalia" (even though they heavily contributed to the instability) to gain market share of import/exports. and in the end, what do they do? they sell the last bit of dignity the Somali people have, which is their sovereignty.
