However in order to be a Somali you also need to be Muslim, seeing as the first documentation of the word Somali came at a time when we were fighting under the Islamic name against the kuffar. Somalia was built on Islam. Hence why we're an ethno-religious group.

Before you mention Somalia before Islam, I have to say that our ancestors land had different names. The Land of Punt for example, where they worshipped Waaq. It's the same land but it came under a different name, our culture was also different back then.

If anything Islam just made our culture more accepting of foreigners. I would understand your point if there was a Somali Axum and there was a central Somali state founded on Islam for 3000 years but that isn’t the case. To put it in modern context it’s like if puntland tomorrow invaded Ethiopia and won some territories. That’s not Somalis united under Islam that just puntlanders united under Islam.
