But to my understanding, didn't the Ethiopians have help ? Somalia was colonized for about 14-15 years, no ? Is it true that they were taxed ? I'm not sure how precisely it down. Also, Omanis didn't rule the Benadir coast at all. It was locally governed by the Geledi Sultanate and the Hiraab Imamate which were the successor states of Ajuran Sultanate. Zanzibar was only nominal meaning they claimed the territories but didn't control it.

Too be honest, I believe at that time Oman was the most power state in East Africa. It's borders were respected, it had outside contacts in Europa, Asia and Americas and it probably had the biggest economy in east Africa. They probably nominally control it cause it didn't care enough to control the territory and wanted to put it under the Omani influence so it didn't become a competitor.

Thanks for posting this. U know, I have said this many times..... the English, especially of the old 17th & 18th & early 19th century give me madness of pleasure. The English writer here is comparing Somalis to the annoying arabs. He means to say, Somalis dont have a "fierce" look like the arabs. The arabs tend to use mascara/dark pencil to pop out their eyes, amidst their atrocious long beards, making them seem "fierce" in their penciled eyes popping out, starring at you as if they want to rob you, amidst their facial bush.


As to "Pleasing" Somalis tend to have sharper features than the arabs whom have meaty features. No one finds meaty facial features as the Jews and the Arabs have as "Pleasing" !
