My pre-war house was build with meager means of my father who saved up for several years to build us the modest house we lived in. The land was given to him as a long serving 3 star military instructor. The Somali regime use to give land and food ration to army officers.

Now his children have build 6 mansions in Hargeisa, some rented and some the family members live in.

I grew up on ceydh. my Uni was paid with financial aid.

Now I'm paying others ceydh bc they take some chunk of my hard earned money.

My father went to the UAE at the age of 19 with nothing but a high school education and the drive to work. Ended up landing a cushy job in the dubai petroleum industry.Thats just the way us somalis in the middle east were. Very hard working, family oriented people.

Well anyways i got those ideas instilled in me very young, and I remember when i first flew to Europe, and witnessed first hand the welfare state, and saw how dishonoured and undignified my people have become. I admit i was a little shocked..furious even. That this was the face being potrayed of my people on this side of the world. From then on i have vowed to myself to never be a sit at home farax and leech of the state to make ends meet. I try to balance working part time and attending a local uni to get by. Hoping I could lead by example

I Forgot to mention that my father was not sleeping at our house from 1988-1990 bc he was a northerner and northerners were being hunted at night by the death squad.

My family has always been self sufficient and business orientated which taught me the value of hard work and being your own boss. my grandad was born with nothing but had a mansion in Rome in the early 70s and over 30 houses in xamar and commercial property worth over 2M by the time I was born my cousin bought over 50 boos in mogadishu a couple years ago.

Every time I discuss the civil war with a group of young Somalis, they all end up telling the same story. It seem like everyone was wealthy, had a few mansions in Mogadishu, and had a grandparent killed in the civil war.

Its like with west african diaspora, with them every comes from king and queens.
