An integrated maritime, logistics and industrial hub in the horn of Africa.
The development of the Berbera Economic Zone (BEZ) in proximity to the Port of Berbera positions it as the new integrated maritime, logistics and industrial hub in the horn of Africa.
Modelled on Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza), DP World’s flagship project in Dubai, the BEZ aims at providing local and foreign investors with a conducive and competitive environment for investment and trade.
The conducive environment will be created through readily available infrastructure consisting of prebuilt warehousing facilities, serviced land plots, office and business centre spaces. Investment and trade facilitation services will also be offered through the setting up of the Berbera Economic Zone Authority’s one stop shop which will be managed by DP World.
The competitive environment in BEZ will be created through a range of fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, including exemption from corporate tax, duty free storage of goods, 100% foreign ownership as well as the ability to operate through branches of foreign companies.
One distinctive advantage that the BEZ will offer to its customers is the commercial benefit of forming part of DP World’s global portfolio of parks and economic zones. They can also benefit from the unique Jafza Incubation Centre offering which will enable BEZ customers to set up their business in Jafza at very competitive costs.
The BEZ will create a positive economic impact in Somaliland by increasing foreign direct investment, creation of jobs as well as the transfer of know how.

Dubai: The Dubai Government owned DP World has commissioned a new container terminal at Berbera Port in Somaliland. This follows completion of the first phase of the port's expansion as part of its development into a major regional trade hub to serve the Horn of Africa.
The new terminal was opened by Muse Bihi Abdi, President of Somaliland, and Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World. The event also included the ground-breaking for the Berbera Economic Zone, the first phase of which is under construction.

The new container terminal - with a deep draft of 17m, a quay of 400m and three ship to shore (STS) gantry cranes - can handle the largest container vessels in operation, and increases the port's container capacity from 150,000 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) to 500,000 TEUs annually. The terminal also includes a container yard with eight rubber tyred gantry cranes. A new port one-stop service centre is being built and will be ready in third quarter this year.
DP World has committed to investing up to $442 million to develop and expand Berbera Port, and with the first phase now complete, work is already underway to further expand the port in a second phase. This includes extending the new quay from 400 to 1,000 metres, and installing a further seven STS gantry cranes, increasing the total from three to 10, enabling the port to handle up to 2 million TEUs a year, and multiple large container vessels at the same time.

This is the sort of thing I hope we see the whole project delivering more of, from Berbera to Wajaale and the country as a whole. That is jobs, training and more opportunities for the younger generations in Somaliland.

An Ethiopian Ship named “Gibe” has started cargo service at Berbera of Somaliland after two decades, APA learned on Tuesday.The ship has transported over 11,000 ton of Sugar and Rice through the Gulf-India Sub-Continent line to the Berbera Port in groundbreaking shipment.
