well in the college admissions process at least it gives AA students, African students, Latinos, and Pacific Islanders a significant boost in chances
So an AA female student with a 1460 SAT would have better chances at a top tier university than a White male student with a 1560, because the affirmative action compensated for the systematic and institiational racism of minorities
It applies to poorer students a lot of times as well, at least in need blind schools

It is only in some places I wish I could have relied on that but I had to settle on being smart instead

so if you gotta 1500+ SAT, 34+ACT, above a 3.9 UW GPA or a 4.4 W GPA, a plethora of worth it extracurricular activities, and a few good sob stories and good essays, are a minority and low income preferably, you’re good for T30 universities
Don’t need to be smart, just a decently hard worker with a knack for test taking
