i remember reading somwehere that khoisans used to have dark skin until they mixed with cushites, as in they selected heavily for lighter skin after that.

Nelson Mandela is about 30-50% San. Similar to how the Bantu and Nilotic ethnic groups of Kenya sporadically show strong Cushitic features in an otherwise non-Cushitic midst (Kalenjin and Kikuyu), I think some Bantus in South Africa on a sub-regional level got excessive HG affinity, hence Earl.

That is correct. They had high selective sweeps for lighter pigmentation alleles introduced by E-M293, associated strongest with Southern Cushites.

As with the new study and archeology, it is firmly established that the Cushites came in earliest contact in southern Africa 2000 years ago.
