The issue stems from the recession, a large number of builders immigrated or retired, a sizeable amount previously worked for the government creating social housing, one of the largest banks defaulted and government had to take over managing a merger, this was due to a housing bubble in the country, builders took on huge sums and they all defaulted.
The price of homes dropped to about 50k - 80k compared to 300k prior to 2008, rent was still about 800 euros at the time, but continually pushed up, to about 1,400 euros by late 2014, and in the last few years 3 bedroom home would cost about 2,500 euros, and to buy it outright about 400,000.
The politicians all own multiple homes and are some of the biggest landlords in the country, some even have shares in hotel chains, and they've artificially pushed housing prices up, to pre-recession prices with the help of huge hedge funds.
The government has welcomed 100k plus Ukrainians in the last 2-3 years, the same amount as the UK, Keep in mind Ireland's population is just about 5.3m.
