There's no such thing as an ex al shabab member. There should be a secret department dedicated in taking these people out, then have special prisons something like guantanamo bay to interrogate them. Those who actually killed should be killed as well, no mercy.

If he brings the whole organization down then yes because he saved the country.

I wouldn't consider him a hero because of all the people he had killed. Although I would appreciate the act. Only Allah swt knows his intentions and if it's a genuine change/remorse then Allah swt will reward him in the next life. He still has face justice for what he's done.

It's just analogy, if you consider this man a hero if he helps us to defeat Al Shabaab. Would Hitler be considered a hero if he dismantled the Nazi regime and gave himself up? The answer to both is of course no. This man's action led to the formation and strength of al Shabaab and the atrocities they committed. Even if he helps the government with inside information he will never be considered a hero.

He has no information on al Shab . He has been running his own militia for several years . That's why the US lifted the 5 million prize on head . This is more of a symbolic victory as he was one of founders of the ICU and Alshabab .

Like @Asma said, hopefully after he's put to use and the war is over he will be brought to justice. Killing him now may discourage potential future defectors and be a loss of useful information.

Regardless of the morality behind this, defections of high level Shabaab is an encouraging sign that the intelligence apparatus has matured in addition to eroding the clan alliances that have allowed them to survive in the countryside for so long.
