Cockney rhyming slang

Rhyming slang started as a way to communicate without being understood by outsiders (e.g. the police). There are rhyming pairs of words - like apples and pears for stairs. The way it's supposed to work is you say the first word of the phrase, not the one that rhymes with the word you are replacing.

So instead of saying my mate went upstairs, you'd say my china went up the apples. (China Plate = Mate) and (Apple and Pears = Stairs)

It's also a good way to spot outsiders who are faking it ( e.g. police). The rhyming pairs used would change over time, so an outsider trying to use the slang would get caught out not knowing the new ones and using old ones.
