They aren't really alien. All things point towards interdimensional beings, aka Jinns. Whether you are religious or not, these entities have been living here longer than we have, they play tricks and come in various forms, in the past, they were creatures of the night-huffed woman, gaseous entities that granted wishes but tricked fools, fae folk, goblins etc..
