I'm currently thinking of going further in my degree, this is my last year and I've picked to do a minor in health promotion and my concentration will be FGM, from there god willing I'll will do my masters and PhD on FGM and open a centre in somalia/djbouti spreading awareness about the risks and side effects of FGM etc .

But I need to know if FGM is a big thing back home ? Before I waste another 10 years in university.

Good post.

I did my Bachelors in FG only

FGM is already saturated topic. It is not as pressing as people think and the health implications is quite limited TBH. FGM doesn't contribute more than 5% of the disease burden of Somalis. More pressing issues are infectious diseases and the overall weak health systems. An even more pressing issues are the underlying factors that contribute to a bad health such as housing, clean water and hygiene. The biggest gain in health was due to a proper sewage system in the west. With just a sewage system, they eliminated dozens of diseases. This suggests that the biggest health gaind are made in domains outside of the health system. In modern times, forbidding smoking can have the same impact as sewage system, this too will eliminated or drastically decrease diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, depression etc etc. I think the Somali equivalent of smoking is khat. Khat is more pressing than FGM imo. Not only from health prospective but also from societal perspective

So I'd suggest that you do continue pursuing your education, but do not go for the low hanging fruit. There are more pressing issues. Since you're in health promotion, do not fight the symptoms, tackle the underlying factors.

Its gonna be hard though. I seen a reer xamar guy who tried to raise awareness and even his wife was against him and wanted to do it to their daughter.

Not any kind of a degree but a PHD and just for awareness, I saw a chick, a graduate of one these community colleges in MPLS with a certificate just doing that in Gaalkacayo. Maybe in Borame, it’s different.

Bal neefkan ila daya. :mahubowtf: Maaxad Boorame usoo hadal qaadaysaa. Edeb darana, neef foqol neef. Phd on fgm :siilaanyolaugh: War yaa ilaahay yaqaan. You do not need a phd on fgm to spread awareness. Horta what would your research problem be? :farole: 68 IQ of somalis? That would be one helluva research problem :siilaanyolaugh:Naaya @SOULSEARCHING this guy wants to deceive you, do not listen to him. :fittytousand:
