Harar was exclusively Somali land before the 14th century. Modern Harar was built on the Gidir Magala (city of Gidir) which later became the central market of Harar. Gidir Magala is the Shangaani and Xamar weyne equivalent of Harar. It’s the part that was given UNESCO world heritage status . The Harar of today is build on Gidir Magala.

Other older towns that predate Harar around the area like Qundhura is going through archeological research. Medieval Masjids are being uncovered at Qundura mountains where Haji Mohamed Hawi(Xawi)/Hawiye, Karanle and Xaskul are burried in the mountain area Gursum facing it’s Qiblah. This area was added to Oromia during the Kilil divisions of Ethiopia. Until today Hawiyes & Karanle live there with other people. It served as a military outpost during Adal-Ethiopia war.
