Dirac has become popular with other Muslim Africans

The Dirac seems to have become popular on that side of Twitter. I don’t mind seeing people wear it, as long as they don’t erase its origin or call it "East African culture”. What do you girls think?

Diracs are very beautiful. And seeing Somali women especially the Eedos and Habaryars decked out in it at weddings is a beautiful sight to see. 10/10. If they are buying Diracs I want the money to go right back to the Somalis that created it no one else should benefit from its sale.

Personally, it only looks good on Somali women or women with a similar build, as along as they don't bastardize it.

I don't want to be rude, but this is the truth.

I love how Nigerian women look in their clothes for example, they look so regal. I don't understand this trends of aping another community, unless it's islamic attire such as abayas and hijabs for modesty purposes. Diracs are NOT modest, so this is nothing more than copy cat culture.

I think Dirac being mainstream is great and all but one thing I will say is that Diracs are too easily marketable as "East African". So I imagine that the industry will quickly shift to calling it east african etc the same way the Kente print is being called the "african" print. That's the first thing that comes to mind when I see this. Otherwise, people just wanna have fun wearing different clothes. I see people wear Abayas and Morrocon Kaftans etc without backlash. It's a case of usually girls just wanting to dress up in something nice especially as Eid is coming up. So I don't see this as an issue but I do worry it will soon be a generalised piece of east african clothing.

The East African Bantus already pretend Baatis and 'Deras' as they call it, are their culture. So, we cannot expect others to have manners and admit where they got it from. They are trying to co-opt our clothes as 'East African' and it seems to be working.

This is the issue right here. Bantus from Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and beyond are wearing our clothes and literally using our language, and trying to pretend there is a 'shared' culture. Additionally, they are even adding insult to injury, by ascribing our clothes to the Arabs that colonised them.

Textile factoriessssss, we should be making money off of this
Exactly! We could easily have soft power over the region (MENA and east africa) like Japan does over east Asia and it would really do wonders for our PR. I was thinking of making a Somali Clothing line myself and one of the things that really appealed to me was the idea of using it to open factories and provide jobs in Somalia (and Somali regions). Everything has to be used to our advantage if we want our country to prosper.

Exactly, there’s no need to gatekeep people are going to copy you regardless.

The arab thing is what annoys me the most 😭😭😭. They'd rather believe their enslavers clothes them rather than their fellow africans? Bisinka.

Wearing it is fine. China's Hanfu is the template for Japan and Korea's national Hanbok and Kimono but I'd hate for this to happen to us because it's not dirac inspired clothing it's just straight up diracs. They should at least change it a little before they claim it as theirs.

It doesn't suit them, that's what I find the craziest about all of this. Not to be rude. But it looks best on slender Xaliimos or hooyos who know how to style it/wear it with confidence.

I've seen a few people calling it east african rather than Somali but how mainstream is that? I assumed it was a social media thing but I see it translating to real life.

Somali women have allowed ourselves to be dragged into this fake East African culture, where our clothes get stolen from under us, and we get nothing out of it. Not even a dry Mandaazi as a gift.
