Does Abdiweli Gaas want to extend his term? An analysis

First of all Gaas said multiple times that he doesn't want to run for a second term as the president of Puntland. But if you pay attention to the developments and his moves in the last few months, it seems like he is behaving like other presidents that wanted and often succeeded in extending their terms. It started with acknowledging that his cabinet won't be able to organise a one-man-one-vote election, which was a clear mandate for this administration. He will probably promise to deliver it if he's given more time. A few weeks ago, he proposed to extend the number of MPs with additional 10 MPs, and a week ago he declared few districts to attract the support of some subclans. As we speak, he 's speaking with the Leelkasse elders and a week ago he had a meeting with some Dashsihle elders. Elevating villages to district status is a widely used tactic of incumbent presidents to extend their mandate. All of these sudden developments, including his frequent cabinet reshuffles gives me the indication that he's aiming for term extension.

If he wants to extend his term, he will probably extend it by two years. That means he will leave office in 2021, the same year presidential election for the SFG is scheduled.

Gaas has a very strong scorecard in development but politically is a weak fella. I would advice him to seek a second term in PL.

After Abdullahi Yusuf (AUN), i dare say Gas is Puntland's greatest president. Puntland has developed immensely in the past three years this man has been in charge.

In regards to PL security and defence, Gas and his administration has been heavily criticised, which i believe is woefully unfair and not justified. Yes, there has been a massive rise in attacks by Al Shabab in his term. But that's a given when you're fighting a people hiding in a mountain ranges, and coming down on the odd occasion to throw a few grenades and shoot up a market or court house.
As for the going ons on our southern border, its a minor issue. I have no idea why some Puntites bang on about that bogus "Federal State" Galmudug all the time or any other moryaan militia or armed group. They possess no threat and danger to PL nor are they a match and our equals. The simplest and best way to deal with any annoying problems from South Galkacyo and beyond, is to simply close the border. When the border was closed off some time ago, there were literally no more attacks of any kind and no assassinations. It was a very effective plan. And if things become a nuisance again, simply close the border.

All in all, as someone with sense from a small clan, i believe Gas has beem fantastic, he's done a good job. Once again, Cumar Maxamuuds achieving soo much. Hope a Ciisa never gets elected as PL President. All they'll do is never leave Garowe and focus solely on Nuugal, they are a very self-entitled people, thinking the world owes them something.

PS. I also have immense love for my Cusman Mahamuud cousins. Don't think i forgot about you lot.

Abdiweli is better than faroole in terms of security, it's not even comparable. Farole did not care about anything outside Garowe, he rarely visited Galkayo (not only his fault) however as president he should have lead in that region when there was assassinations by "Gal-Mudug" and al-shabaab.) Galmudug obviously possess no thread it's a neighborhood in Galkayo, it's a nuisance to economic development. Each time a danyeer from that place picks up and ak47, that's less people that want to invest due to insecurity. There are forces that want Galkayo always to be at war because economic development cements Puntland in Galkayo (as if we are not already). But that is the mindset of those people, thats why you see them with maps to Burtinle, you are dealing with an illogical irrational sometimes inhumane kind of force like forces of mordor.

On the contrary there are many who can oppose him like ilkajiir, Cabdi awaare, Faroole, ina xaaji, col faraweyne.....the list goes on dude and don't forget gaas only won because other politicians gave him their votes Faroole alone had more votes than all candidates combined. He wont be able to extend as all the men that made him win and that he backstabbed won't let him do that.

If Gaas does not hold free elections by Jan 2019, he will not be coming back. Holding elections is Puntland's only way of getting more recognition and attention from the IC. If Gaas fails at this, he is gone. Puntland will be 20 years old in 2018, we have to hold elections, to not do so is insane.

I already sense that Gaas is trying to avoid holding elections, unfortunately.

He's done decent in Puntland and has helped the private sector meet thier needs.

Gaas respects entrepreneurs and avoids lazy people looking for handouts. I just hope more Capital is available from banks to loan future startups looking to build the province without bringing in China's poorest and dumbest to make profits in Puntland.

I would only vote for the person who develops the country. But, right now there's too much cheap Chinese credit flying around Africa and its mouth watering to avoid.
