New reports claim that Eritrean activists have published a memo allegedly released by the Government of Eritrea which asked the country’s men to marry at least two wives, or face prison sentences. The memo claims that this decision was taken due to the shortage of men in the country, a condition caused by a secession war with Ethiopia that saw the deaths of more than 150,000 Eritrean soldiers.
“First that every man shall marry at least two women and the man who refuses to do so shall be subjected to life imprisonment with hard labour. The woman who tries to prevent her husband from marrying another wife shall be punished to life imprisonment.”
This claim is yet to be confirmed by the Eritrean government or national papers, but it is gaining massive attention in Nigeria and beyond Africa.
