Ethiopia economy fake

I was just looking at african countries gdp and I decided to take a look at ethiopias Wikipedia page. It's absolutely crazy it says their gdp is 250 billion. Which doesn't make any sense. Sp i looked around and apparently the ethiopian govt is reporting a gdp of 200 billion up from 163 last year . Which makes no sense how do you get a 22% growth in 1 year. I knew their numbers were fake but not like this.

"ethiopia" is built off crazy historical myths and lies. "growing economy future african superpowah!!!" is one of them. it's not uncommon for 3rd world to lie about their GDP (as seen in bangeladesh), in this case it is a myth from the TPLF era to get a chunk of cheap free flowing capital in the neoliberal free trade era.

they also under-counted their population to increase per capita GDP AND undercount their birth rate. nearly all of their capital is in addis ababa, all managed by the state and if you look outside it you'll find nothing. quick and easy game to make themselves look more "developed" and "modern".

can't say this hasn't worked so far, but a bullshit economy will unravel like 2008.

If you figured out that wait till you figure out there true population. How can a hungry country that has multiple civil war population be 120 million? I truly think there population is not for that 40 million.

They inflate their numbers and shrink Somali and Muslims numbers overall.

Since we are on the topic of myths about ethiopia.

I still can not get over how people genuinely believe they are better off then Somalia.

They currently have videos of beheadings casually floating around and it barely raises any concerns.

If only Somalis understood how bad things really are for them and how good Somalis have it.

These kind of things are unheard of for us, and any small disturbance in Somalia makes international news. Meanwhile things like this are ignored.

They are even kidnapping people and forcing conscription because their military has fallen apart and are extorting their peasants to free them

@Idilinaa

$250 billion gdp but a government budget of 801 billion birr or $14billion ($6.4 billion after its recent devaluation) doesn’t add up

There is videos of Amharas and Oromos beheading each other on twitter, it is like a competition for them. I will not share such gruesome videos.

Sick people.

Didnt the IMF try gauging their real gdp by analysing them through their city light density by satellite? They are known to constantly inflate their numbers. Also your getting a follow love your posts man 👍

They’re subsistence grain farmers + Christian so pro natal, it’s one of the things they should be admired for. Very resilient people

High fertility in Africa isn’t surprising

I already knew their economy was fake ie but I didn't think the stats would be so off. Bjf I believe there pouplation is probably 100 million + . It's been growing steadily. For decades and there hasn't been any weird jumps in pouplation.

Interestingly enough I founded this article from 2015 where this person talks about thier economic growth numbers in the 2000s and early 2010s are actually very off and that the so called growth was them just manipulating their agricultural growth and increasingit by 30%. They also talked about how the so called "poverty reduction" was actually fake. Since it was based off this fake agriculture increase.

The fact that this was the supposed golden age of Ethiopias economic growth and it was in large part made up makes me wonder after years of this propaganda if they belive their own lies now.

Yeah it's fake numbers , back in 2015 they measured their real GDP is somewhere close to or less than 15 Billion and it was frequently accused for falsifying development stats to portray fake growth

It's like @hayran said , they do it to attract foreign direct investments and to create positive image of the country via western lobbying.

Ethiopia’s economic growth borrows from ENRON’s accounting

It all collapses when you deep how many people are dying from famine and they are suffering food shortage, yet their economy is largely just agricultural based.

How are they at the same time producing soo much greater crop yield to export in large sums to attract hard currency? and boost economic and gdp growth. It makes literally no sense at all.

Infact the reality is that they only produce bare minimum subsistence and have to rely on emergency food aid in greater parts

@Idilinaa

You can already tell how bad it is from how many just flock to Puntland, JigJiga and Somaliland in droves.

I also suspect from the lack of drought and famine reports in the Somali region compared to other regions, probably reflects that they have better food security over the past two years.

Shared some examples some months ago about the agricultural strides they made utilizing the fertile Shabelle zones.

And it also might be that it's the only the region that is not practicing crony capitalism and enclave economy either.

I have to look into it more but it doesn't seem like they even have a vibrant private sector from most reports that i have seen they lack a private sector economy and it's just a tightly controlled state driven public sector economy that is largely rural and agricultural.

In contrast to Somalia which has a diversified , market driven and vibrant private sector. There is greater entrepreneurial activity in Somalia

It's important to note this because the Private sector is where you find the highest levels of employment in most countries.

The lack of private sector probably explains the lack of urbanization in Ethiopia.

Yeah this was the article I was talking about. It's absolutely astonhsing how much they cook the numbers but i guess with the absolute control they have who can stop them. But i don't think their gdp is $15 billion that's too low their pouplation is too large for it to be that low. I suspect it's around the 50 billion mark.

Their growth rates have been inflated for decades.
The IMF did a massive downward revision of their GDP in the October 2024 WEO. This was probably a condition of Ethiopia getting the $3.4 billion loan in July of this year. Some of it is likely to be due to the devaluation of the Birr.

How would it be 50 billion when their economy is agricultural and they have lower crop yield then uganda?

Their Agricultural total export revenue 3.3 billion and coffee made up 1.5 billion of that. The rest being sesame and fresh cut flowers.

While Uganda agricultural export revenue is around 3.9 billion.

Ethiopia's total export is 4 billion and imports being 12 billion.

Compare it to other countries with 50 billion GDP their export/import is significantly higher than that.

You know what nvm , you are probably right @Midas

I compared it to Uganda, who has export revenue 4-5 billion and it has a GDP of 49 billion.

So it's safe to suspect Ethiopia probably has a 40-50 billion GDP, if that estimate is correct.

Yeah but if it was really 15 billion, there would be mass starvation with their massive pouplation. I think they do not produce enough for export but just enough to survive and their local needs. Keep in mind like 80% of the pouplation is rural. They don't really need an export oriented economy when all of these people just live in farms and small towns

If I'm being honest if still think its too high. The growth rates in 2021 and 2022 are ridculous. But I guess their okay with ethiopia faking those stats to some degree.

That's true they have large domestic market, that factors into GDP more not just the exports. Where they produce, purchase and consume goods and products domestically.

So next question becomes how much revenue does that account for?

Probably not a lot. But keep in mind that they concentrated all the money in the core region and tigray. And now with abiy it's all going into the core . and since most of the pouplation is rural there's probably not a large need to invest in much except a little bit of infrastructure like roads and maybe the power grid. Ethnic federalism i susoect meant that each region did it's own thing

Honestly I get why the they chose Ethnic federalism in the 90s. But it honestly weakness the Ethiopian idneity and most likely the reducing of the status of amahric hurt education and literacy . Since people used Tigrinya and oromo more. They likley reversed decades of assimilation becuase of this choice
