Siyad Barre had this policy where he held the country in a tight grip. He had this arrogance that he will be the one and only ruler for life. On top of that the government was a centralized government. What does that mean you ask? Say that you lived in Hargeisa and you needed a passport, well, you have to get the passport from Mogadishu, a 1000m away from Hargeisa.

Then in 1982 the people of Hargeisa , after getting fed up with lack of infrastructure did a do-it yourself construction of schools and roads l, this Barre came and arrested major number of people and torture them and killed some of them. This was the spark of the rebellion.

Hoyoo grew up in Xamar and lived next to Villa Somalia. She hates Barre doesn't like talking about him because he's dead. She told me he used to bring in wild animals to Villa Somalia, head over to the most famous hotel with a bunch of escorts and he even created a curfew no one was allowed to leave the house after 4 in the afternoon. Not only that but hoyoo witnessed her own neighbors disappear after they openly criticized Barre, the police would come and pick them up and they would never return.

The point is Barre was horrible he's dead now holding grudges for something that happened 30 years ago is pointless. People should discuss what happened in a educational manner to make sure it never happens again.
