One of the names for hedgehog in Somali is xiddig which means star while in Xamar it is called kuulay cali banjar. Does anyone know the origin for this name or what the exact meaning is? I have looked through multiple dictionaries to no avail.

My butcher has told me that it is a name given to it by children and it has an accompanying song. This songs seems to vary depending on where I look.

Another thing of note is the saying "Habar Kuuley uu sheeg, aniga ha ee sheegin" which is used to dismiss a statement that is seen as ridiculous or unbelievable. Habar Kuulay is also used to describe an incompetent person.

Are these relations sheer coincidence or is there a relation?

I have also seen a reoccurring joke in Somali language spaces as seen below. I assume that it is a joke but I have issues with sarcasm and the likes so I am currently awaiting a peer review from my relatives.

To note, Porcupine is called kashiito or caano-qub which means milk spiller. It breaks into your house and knocks over milk containers thus spilling them. I have some spikes from one that I was chasing after nearly five years ago. Till this day they are incredibly sharp.

When i heard the name first thing i thought of was banjar==puncture? cos of the spines but i dont think it can be that high level of a joke
I think its just a random name kids decided to call hedgehogs whenever one arrived and probably crowd around it. My parents don't know the meaning either

This must be a joke based on northerners not having kuuley cali banjar in their vocabulary and they just make up a story about meeting a guy once called that to not be caught lacking

I think somali has a culture of doing something not for any reason in particular but rather to not get caught lacking by someone who understands why something is done and eventually noone remembers why they did such a thing but they still do it

I feel that Kuulay Cali Banjar could be a case of applying meaning to the meaningless but I will exhaust all avenues before "giving up". However, I do think a lot about this word if I be honest.
