What's wrong with all these people who keep building hotel after hotel whilst we don't have any decent infrastructure. Realistically, it's beyond stupid as there are hardly any tourists in Somaliland besides ethnic Somalis.

I'm aware it's private investment but at some point you would think someone would at least try and build some decent infrastructure.

I think we could one day have a great tourism industry but that should not be the focus right now.

So it's a good beginning and start for Borama. I am sure they are building and investing in other things that is not covered in that tweet.

I agree. Hotels are good however I used this to point out a reoccurring issue. Our issue is that we build hotels, many lovely hotels even, but generally we don't do much else. An economy cannot be propped up by tourism. Whilst Somaliland is safe. The fact that it's part of Somalia will mean it will always have "terrorist" warnings attached to it. The tourism industry is simply not enough to generate much money.


Boroma may be more developed as it is in the safer Somaliland but country wise, we have very little infrastructure. We still have people living in unsuitable housing and I know it's private investment so we cannot tell people what to do with their money but going to a developing country and building hotels like this disgusts me. A lot of these people, like the girl in the video at least, are diaspora taking advantage of the cheaper labour and start up costs. They don't desire improvement in their country they just want to take advantage of it. A lot of diaspora think this way, they aren't any better than the cadaans ruining Hawaii or Bali.

Again, I am not saying Hotels are bad. It's lovely and a testament to the potential of our economy but I just wish people saw the bigger picture. Hotels but no waste collection system? Beautiful villas but a good chunk of our population are starving? Its beyond twisted.

Even Mogadishu is ridiculous. Most governments advise against travel and foreigners need security escorts in the region. If by some miracle Mogadishu did get some tourism, our security would be quickly overwhelmed and AS might manage to k1ll some Ajnabis so travel will be restricted. Also we have lovely areas in Mogadishu but some areas are still destroyed by war, dirty (since there is no centralised public cleaning) etc. Mogadishu only savings grace is that since its the capital, it gets a wider range of people coming to visit whereas other areas only get people with ancestry from the area visiting.

I'm not saying to go build elsewhere. I'm saying that at least some of this "building" should be going towards something that benefits the country and its people. You'd think someone would think "I'd like for my country to have say running clean tap water". There are many people with degrees that can get something done.

Borama is 3rd largest town in Somalia, after Mogadishu and Hargeisa. So it really reflects a growing demand.

Some of their startups won awards and investment prices last years


They have made strides to get more youth employed in the tech sector and innovation

Rwanda makes sense however we do not need to do that. Rwanda is small and landlocked, Somalia is large and has many desirable natural resources. We could make some money from that. Open up factories to refine and create industries wuth jobs for the youth, then use that money to build infrastructure and open schools. I'm no professional but something like that could improve our lives at least a little. Rwanda is completely different to us, we need to think using what we have. Of course this requires a decent government, but I'm shocked no one has at least tried. Even if it fails, you could give lots of young people jobs and good experiences.

I'll watch this video in a bit! I'm outside right now and I have no headphones. I'd like to stress I'm not specifically talking about Boroma, I only used this video as an example. This seems incredible. Start ups are just a small part of what we really need.

But on a country wide scale, the hotels need to stop and people should at least try and invest in different sectors at least

They are not only building hotels , this is false. The accommodations are not only aimed at foreigners, they are aimed at transnational Somali travelers and regional investors to inject foreign currency into economy and make use of services.

Somaliland has even built road infrastructure to boost regional trade into Ogaden.

I have never been but I do question how well our governments totals up the population. I'm certain those cities are bigger than Boroma but I don't trust any numbers regardless.
