Explaining Strange obsession with 1969-91 & Siad barre

Alot of young somali men online seem to have an obsession with Somalia in the period and with the dictator, Siad barre. We all know the guy went mental in the final years and committed massacres against clans such as isaaq. But looking at Somalia in that time, the invasion of our enemy Ethiopia, the army, the old footage of pre war cities like Mogadishu.

I'm scrolling through somali tiktok of people celebrating the fact we can import weapons and we can secure our air space. In 2023. I just can't help but think about how Somalia was so much more before. The nation has regressed too much since 91. Siad barre did ultimately cause the collapse of the state but to many of the youngsters online he was also the face of Somalia in the last era where we were an actual country and not a UN colony getting our borders crossed by Ethiopians and Kenyans daily. Troops all over the state, new self declared country every year. All of this never happened during the dictatorship.

Thoughts?

Idc about clans tbh. I would invite all Somalis to conduct business in Djibouti if possible. I didn't sweep the victims of his dictatorship under the rug. I merely stated that he was the face of the last era where Somalia was a real country and so nationalist youngsters today feel a sort of rose tinted nostalgia towards the Kacaan.

I'm from Djibouti with little familial connection to what is called Somalia πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡΄
Most my family live in Djibouti πŸ‡©πŸ‡― and Dir dhaba. But I'm conscious of my ethnicity and πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡΄ is the country of Somalis.

The politics and clan battle royal of Somalia never crossed my mind until I started getting interested in the horn. We Djiboutians haven't seen anything comparable to Somalia or Ethiopia. We don't have any war in over a century barring some small scale battles with colonial troops or geelgires beefing in the desert.
