Gender segregation in Maqayads.

It's an option, some women prefer it, it's also available in the UK I believe.

Is it a new custom in the UK or does this also happen in Somalia? I think the UK somali community follows the Timo jeleecs too much so I can't tell what is authentic or not.

I can see why some might like it but it seems redundant to me. In the UK, we all eat in shared establishments anyways. It's unlikely anyone avoids all establishment in the country. So it seems like an unnecessary fixture. Private rooms make more sense but even that is pointless because a lot of these Maqayads arent really restaurants. They're more informal so a private room doesnt make sense.

Alot of somali cafés and restaurants in the west are ghetto, i.e the food and decor is trash. The only people that frequent them are men (usually older ones), the few women that go there want some privacy since its so awkward to sit in an establishment with mostly men

it’s different if it’s a proper restaurant with good food and nice decor, then the customers will be more mixed and there will be no need for a separate section for women

There is normally a woman's/family section but not in the more "upscale" ones. I once saw a white woman and a man (likely a couple) come in and the waiter took them to the section and then drew the curtains on them without any explanation. The restaurant was packed too with only men and they were the only ones in the section.

This is not a thing in Somalia, atleast not for the ’nicer’ cafés and restaurants
I only went when I was younger as a child and we didn't sit in many establishments. My mum was worried and overly cautious about us getting sick since we were young. That's why I wanted to know about what goes on in Somalia. Thanks for letting me know!

Is it based on Qabill practices or is it more regional? For example, people in tve Borth do XYZ whilst people in the south do ABC.

What country did this happen in?

This is in Canada where the old, rundown restaurants are run mostly by Darod and Hawiye fobs.

The waiter who did it is a fob who wouldnt have understood the importance of explaining why but the cadaans got the best service. They basically had their own waiter while everyone else had terrible service. If you're cadaan in a Somali restaurant, you get the royal treatment.

I stay away from specific sub-clan restaurants since they can't cook as well as others.

Do you live in Somalia?

Do people write reviews on establishments. Where I live, people care about reviews a lot.
No.

nobody writes reviews, I dont even think u can find some of these spots online.

the people that frequent these ghetto cafes/restaurants don’t care about quality

How do you know their Qabils? Did they tell you? :rejoice:

I've seen 1 or 2 restaurants with family sections in America and women usually eat there out for comfort as nobody wants to eat next to a bunch of men. But the main section is for both men and women and I've seen women there.

Now are you saying in the UK, they have split gender sections with no mixing? Like the way masjid are? Because if so, I would not be surprised UK Somalis are something else. You know the womens section is probably trash too.
