I agree that it's mostly old men full of pride whom are responsible for maintaining the resentment, whether in Somalia or Ethiopia.
And yea, our ethnic groups are like your clans almost. Then within our ethnic groups, we still have people who wish to divide into more regional identities...which might as well be our version of sub clans.

Is Habesha a collective word like Somali though? With Amhara, Gurage and others being the major tribes? I just searched it up and the entirety of Habesha only makes 35 million people.

It's a complex term, and has 3 meanings I believe.
Most narrow definition: Amhara (Ethiopian), Tigrayan (Ethiopian), Tigrinya (Eritrean)
Linguistic definition: Amhara (Ethiopian), Gurage (Ethiopian), Harari (Ethiopian), Tigrayan (Ethiopian), Tigre (Eritrean), Tigrinya (Eritrean)...not sure if the Bilen or Saho people are included in this or not.
Broad definition: A diaspora term that most Ethiopians and Eritreans use to identify/connect with each other...regardless of ethnic group.
Somali is one identity unified by language, religion, and culture...although there is a common "Habesha" culture (if you use the narrow definition), each group have their own language and unique differences so we're not collective unless in the diaspora among friends.
Edit: not sure if we are only 35 million people, but it may depend on what definition is being used I guess.
