I was in the UK a while back and I noticed this crap. I also saw they mixed houmous with oodkac at that 'sabiib' restaurant. This kind of poor marketing is why our cuisine is disrespected and otherised.

I don't see this in other countries with Somali populations.

It’s actually so embarassing , I’ve had countless friends ask me to explain to them how mango lassi is apart of Somali culture because they keep labelling that drink as Somali at these restaurants. I’m still confused on why they can’t use the word hilib? One restaurant also sells biryani.

Mangos are native to Somalia and we have our own fruit drinks. Kuwaan wey na ceebeeyeen.
Shall we apply pressure on them like we did when they had that Hindi marketing them with dabo wayn and moos?

Yh maybe we need to change a lot of words in our language. Maybe we need to stop saying words like kursi, Al baab, tariikh, qalin, fursad, dowlad, xukun, fakar, rajo, cadalad and the hundreds of other Arabic loanwords we have.

Or maybe you could understand that in the world there is a concept called loanwords and people and countries that are geographically close or traded with each other used to have similar words from each side.

Reminds me of how some stores say chapati instead of Sabayaad. The Indian version and the Somali version do not even taste the same. Also theres this one somali restaurant that I went to once and it was straight up Mediterranean food. And it wasn't even good. Now that I'm thinking about it these stores were marketed to a non-somali population.

Speaking of Yemeni food, not too long ago I saw a guy doing a food review at some Yemeni restaurant and they served the platter then put bananas on the table. I guess Somali food has made people realize banana+rice is delicious.

Uk Somali shops kinda cater to the middle eastern market more so then african even tho it’s branded as african food so they throw in a lot of arabic stuff to get arab arab appeal which tbh is kinda smart since arabs are a huge population in europe
