bosaso is twice as far from bab-el mandeb.

Berbera is closer to ethiopian trade links, it's just a far more valuable asset, one you could build a country around. Roads that go through population centres are excellent for tradelinks berbera goes through hargeisa.

There was no option for the Somalian state to strategically withdraw from Somaliland territory during civil war. Their whole rent was coming from Berbera so they had no choice but to fight to the end.

In many wars armies have strategically withdrawn from areas and used other tools to gain advantage.
