Hindis selling Baatis and Diracs under "Afro Couture" name

It's embarassing when I see a woman on tiktok wearing a baati and then the comments are flooded by people asking her is she Somali. And if she is not why are you wearing a baati.

Bro do these people not comprehend a baati is not exclusive to Somalia. It probably didn't even originate in Somalia lol.

It's like Somalia getting pissed off when an Indonesian or a Sri lankan or Yemeni wears Macawiis. When in reality its just a peice of clothing that we share and like many other things cultures sometimes share certain aspects.
Baati/dirac shiid did originate in Somalia lol, as for non-somalis they were introduced to it fairly recently.. but ur right, it’s trashy to harrass people for wearing it

Yh that's what I'm saying. I've seen loads of Kenyans or Tanzanian women wearing baati and they have another word for it in their language. And in the comments it's 1000 people saying why are you wearing our clothes, that belongs to us, it's not a Tanzanian or Kenyan etc..

It's very embarassing behaviour. I think we need to accept that we share things with other cultures, whether they started it first or we did, it's now become a easy African piece of clothing.

I've seen people on tik tok argue that the dirac, shiid and baati is also a part of their culture which is crazy because it's obviously not true. I think the material that is used to make diracs originally comes from India hence why they're trying to make profit off of it now. They should specify that the clothing is native to Somalis instead of labelling it as 'afro couture'.

These clothings are definitely not the Somali culture originally. Somalis are known as lamagoodle, I'm pretty sure women weren't wearing baati in the desert with the camels

No we would make our own textiles for Diracs. Now you could say they get it from India but I’ve met generation of families who made the textiles for Diracs and Somali clothing.

Then what do you think Somali women were wearing back then? I'm genuinely curious. Baati has always been a part of the culture, even in the deserts they would wear baati and guntiino. You can go on google images and find a plethora of vintage photos of Somali women in baatis.
