It is a legacy from colonisation.

During colonisation, kids were given a traditional name and a Western name in Asian and many African colonies. Notable example is Nelson Mandela, his name Nelson is not his birth name but rather one given to him by his kindergarten teacher.

To this day, children born in places like Singapore, Hong Kong will have Western names from birth.

I’d laugh as well a brown skinned Indian girl for saying that, but I really am American. I’m light skin and people tell me I look Ethiopian. If someone asks where my family is from. I’d be honest and say Somalia.
