How widespread is French in Djibouti?

Does the common man speak it? If I go into a store and only speak French, will they understand me? Or is it like Somalia where most people have forgot their colonizers language?

Never been to Djibouti but from their diaspora they're nothing like Somalis with Italian/English, they absolutely adore the French and their shitty language/culture.

The only thing we took from Italy was baasto and a few loanwords like doolshe

Most educated Djiboutians speak it and some of the Somali Djiboutians mix a lot of French loanwords into their Somali.

Djiboutis probabaly have the most broken somali in all of the peninsula. The adults can speak proper laakin when it comes to the youth, all they speak is french. Its also the business language sometimes.

Italy's economy is shit and they wouldn't be open to hiring Somalis from Somalia. So Italian will pretty much die out in South Somalia as the links between the two countries are totally gone.

French is a bit more useful globally.

The Italians where weak hence why they only colonised Eritrea, Libya and Somalia. The British where weak, the Dervish held them back until the RAF intervention which destroyed Dervish fortresses and strong holds. After they got rid of the Dervish's, the British fought with the Italians over some lands. The question is WHY was Somalia the only country that was split into French Somaliland, British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland? NEP was given again to the British (Kenya) and the Ogaden to Italy.
