Most material support came from other Arab states as Eritreans after Haile Selassie dissolved the assembly and ended the autonomous status that was given to Eritrea in 1950 by the UN and forcefully incorporated the territory to his imperial state , they went to Arab capitals to where they successfully lobbied their case and got the support they needed one of those capitals is ofc Mogadishu where prominent leaders of the ELF jebha external affairs used to get Somali diplomatic passports but when it comes to arms and training that was Sudan Syria Iraq even China and not Somalia.

Haile Selassie was facing opposition from university students who got inspired by Marxism and socialism and those ideas found its way into the military whom have conducted a coup in 1974 and ended one of the oldest monarchy in the world.
Mengistu only came to power in 1977 after several executions against prominent leaders of the Derg because of the internal conflict that existed between the officers and I don't think there was such similar thing happened in the Somali Republic in 1969 where group of lower ranking officers mounted a coup and set up a committee to run the country
