Warya, don't use your experience as a rule of thumb to generalize all of us. somalis and a few west african are all the dark skinned people European see, it seems that somalis take on a black identity to counter whites racism in europe. in the U.S, where an indigenous black population already exist, our refusal to be called black has a much to do with separating ourself from the identity and legacy of what black means in american as much as it is to divide us from white Christian americans. in Africa, we share nothing with west/central/south african and unique our looks, culture and history divides us from black africa. furthermore, african themselves have adopt AA Ideology to fight colonialism. while the opportunistic Xabasha assimilate african liberation struggle, somalis were more stand offish. it only when we moved to the west that we began to understand black liberation movement. our rejection of the word black also has intellectual dimensions. are we so intellectual handicapped that we take the ideology of descendant of West African, surely we would be culture and intellectually true to ourself if we developed our own philosophy and ideology rather than bickering over black movement rhetoric developed over a hundred year ago. it like NATO, it once serve a purpose but not long any longer, and people cling to it out of sense of nostalgia.
