I really think 70% of Somali Youth today can’t speak Somali

So why can't the youth today speak Somali? Other ethnicities speak their own language fluently, So why don't Somalis speak it too?

They understand and speak Somali to a certain degree, which is enough for them. They have no real motivation or need to learn Af Somali.

Nah these other ethnicities can't speak their languages well. None of my Chinese, Arab, and South Asians at my school spoke their languages Lol. I think this is the cost of leaving your country of origin. You start to lose pieces of yourselves. Though one thing I noticed the ones that could speak well were the ones who had parents that instilled pride and taught them how to speak it at a young age. They got enrolled in Mandarin lessons but the parents did not stop there they fully spoke the language at home and whenever they called eachother. Cuz my friends that only did mandarin lessons and did not fully speak it at home could not communicate well.

Yeah we are cooked. Even the level of Somali they understand is not good at all because Parents water it down so much. I don't know why we don't have after school Somali learning programs. Like my friends went to Urdu and mandarin lessons and it counted as a language course.

I think it’s more like 90%. Other groups are not nearly the same. Some of them try to argue about Somali history or politics without even knowing the language. Language isn’t just how you speak, it’s also how you think. We don’t value our own language and look down on it, and that is a hard truth to acknowledge
