>For parents who came to the United States with girls who’d already undergone the procedure, the bill, which mandates reporting to authorities by health care providers and others, could discourage doctor visits.

I think the idea is to not victimise girls who have already gone through the procedure twice over. As stated in the article, people aren't necessarily opposed to the bill, but are more so looking for a revision.

It's absolutely disgusting that the lawmakers overlooked that. They're going to apologize to the community for their short sightedness 10 years from now when they ruin 100s of families with this

most important part

I wouldn't blame her for voting for it since voting against the bill or even abstaining from the vote would not make any difference and would only serve as political ammunition for any future re-election.

I would have a different reaction if she was the one that introduced the bill or if she had the tie vote.
its not like that at all. supporting bills like this would actually have negative impact on her chances as most of her supporters are somali. she most likely read the first line that said stopping fgm and went with it.

That's conjecture.

What they need is a tough approach. This has been going on despite the illegality of the practice in the state, the clamp down is necessary.
You're asking for a health epidemic. No somali girl would want to see their parents locked up and be separated from them. The ramifications of this bill will cause those with FGM to ghost their health practitioners.
Conjecture.

It may rock the ship at first, but after the initial jolt, it'll 1) cause a plunge in FGM 2) encourage the relocation of some of the more obstinate few.

It's funny how FGM is banned in Somalia but it is still an evident concern in many Somali communities. If our legislature(don't mention how corrupt or weak it is cause we ain't about that life) knows how shitty FGM is then why should it even be a concern in our Somali community. I understand it was different for our parents but if any Somali MP or SJW goes against FGM then we should 100% support it.

But, it is a different aspect to if our parents should be jailed or not. Their values was different to ours so we shouldn't even judge our parents.

OP is right when he says this is a slick attempt to undermine the community. A revision is a fair comprise instead of casting a wide net entrapping alot of somali families.

Inshallah our generation can get rid of this cultural practice. It would be tragic if we did it to our own kids

I support this legislation. It's high time parents who force their children to undergo FGM be punished. They cannot be allowed to raise a child.

Sound like tough drug laws. :icon lol:

How are those working out?

If it's a public HEALTH issue it should be dealt like one. The fact that there so much politicizing of little African girls genitals is creepy and clearly for non health reasons.

The British tried to stop fgm in Kenya, I believe, all the while systematically maiming and raping Kikuyus.Give me a break.

Because coming down on a culturally rooted practice overnight is going to solve the the problem...

How do you suppose we handle Somalis migrating from Somalia, a place where it's socially acceptable to perform FGM? Are we going to remove the child from their care upon arrival or refuse them entry all together? It's more than reasonable to presume parents who have had FGM performed on their daughters will be very reluctant to let their daughter see healthcare professionals if it's pretty much guaranteed she'll be taken away.

Clearly strict measures have to be put in place. Now migrant doctors are being prosecuted bc these ppl can't go without mutilating their childrens' privates. Go back to Africa if you're about that life :camby:

Do these people not understand how dire the situation is?
Clitoridectomy is basically castration. Upwards of 90% of adult Somali women are castrated, and they are talking about ceeb?!
50% of our ethnic group are castrated people!

:faysalwtf:

I hope this bill becomes law. It's high time there's punishments involved. They will stop. There have been workshops, community forums, focus groups, but yet just last month two girls were taken from Minnesota to Michigan to have FGM done on them by a doctor.

If you do, then the previous laws failed as a deterrent and FGM is on the rise in the United States. If the culture was reversed and instead, male children were to be castrated and loose a ball, male legislators would have been pissed off and debating the death penalty for parents who castrate young boys. FGM is evil and requires harsh punishments for parents to understand that they can't torture their kids.

It's not that I'm against banning FGM or am ignorant of what kind of wicked practice it is. The article pointed out clear flaws in the bill and states a revision is required for it to be effective.

Are you looking to prevent and end the practice or are you looking to simply directly (or indirectly) punish all parties involved? Because if it's the latter you might as well up the charge to death sentence. I'm sure that would make everything better /s

Educational programs, Somali media discourse and even religious edicts against the practice have been issued and ran for decades and people who believe that FGM helps rather than harms women are on the increase, then how could you eradicate without stiff penalties? It is a misplaced belief that it helps the chastity of a woman and thereby assists the image of the family honour. It should be regarded as terrorism and Security apparatuses such as Homeland, FBI and other top agencies should investigate these crimes and the courts should hand down tough penalties for any parent found guilty of FGM. The carrot and stick approach should work.

I have absolutely no problems with the parents and all other guilty parties facing consequences. The problem with this bill is that it's a blanket solution to FGM. As I mentioned earlier, what if the families migrating to the U.S have already performed FGM (in a place where it's socially acceptable) on their daughters. The bill requires it to be reported by health professionals so due action can be taken. Is this just? Would it be better for the daughter to be removed from her parents' care? You might think so. I'd wager otherwise but that's besides the point anyway. The worry the bill brings on is that girls that (may have already had) FGM performed on them will be prevented from seeing health care professionals since they're obligated to report it and as a consequence will have to face the consequences. This bill needs to be revised, and I don't mean laxer consequences.

If you dont live in the US and you dont know how the laws are written I suggest you to STFU.

These bastards will write a law that sounds "nice" but in reality there's other motives behind it.

Let me give u an example, think about giving citizens a "right to work", it sounds nice but in reality it takes away "minimum wage" and gives the employer the right to pay u pennies, but since u have a "Right to Work" you can walk away while good ol Alejandro and Pablo are more than delighted to take ur place.

These people who object to the Bill are calling for a lesser "punitive approach focused on educating parents.educational programs". Why not both? How many more children have to suffer? It is time for action. As for those new refugees whose procedures took place abroad before they settled there, it doesn't apply to them. "An amendment to Franson's Bill states the penalties apply only if the ritual is practised in the United States".

The truth is, they have no rational reason to oppose it.

do you dismiss women advocacy groups like below as just irrational. what about the author of the bill having second thoughts about it. all the experts in the article from different fields are all just irrational.

Fartun Weli of Isuroon, which won a $180,000 federal grant this winter to educate health care providers about the procedure, stresses that she does not condone the practice.

But she and other critics balk at separating girls from their families, which they argue victimizes them a second time. They say they worry about families arriving from places where the practice is deeply rooted. An amendment to Franson’s bill states the penalties apply only if the ritual is practiced in the United States. But Haji Yusuf, a Somali community leader in St. Cloud, questions whether authorities can always readily determine that.

These irresponsible women should be jailed and the kids should be taken away.
How heartless can you be to insist on mutalating your own daughter. These ignorant women should dealt with.
I'm sick and tired of them crying to the community when CPS are doing their job. Did the Somali community tell you to inflict that kind of horror on your daughters? You can take the person of out badiyo but you can't take the badiyo out of the person. I'm sick and tired of these reer badiyo, badow, people ruining the Somali name.
