I was actually curious at the reasons for the disparity between china and india considering they are both large countries with similar population size, so i spent some time looking into it. The caste system plays into creating inequality & massive wealth disparity you see in their country.

I used to think it was due to crony capitalism on steroids. The lack of cleanliness is due to poverty and lack of waste disposal system, the richer an area becomes the cleaner it gets because they invest in waste disposal when they have the money.

The language barrier makes them into a very seperated nation, India speaks 320 different languages . It doesn't operate like a real country, instead it's like 32 seperate nations that happen to be arrayed along the British rail lines. Where as 90% of China understands Mandarin, so there is no communication barrier.

China also invested far more in their human capital and gender equality. They have more skilled , better educated labour force and they have higher female particpation in labour around 80% which results in higher total productivity. China and India was equally productive in the 1950s but by 1980s china became more than 50% productive than India.

Today Chinas productivity is nearly double that of India, while Indian workers 45% are still in the unproductive agricultural sector, China has emerged from even simple labor intensive manufacturing to emerge , for example ,as a dominant force in global car markets , electric vehicles in particular.
