Is fish forbidden in somali culture?

Ibn battuta mentions Zeila as a stinky city because of the fish market. They did eat lots of fish there .Coastal and urban somalis ate fish all the time. The cushitic fish taboo is very ancient but that doesn't mean it stuck among all Somalis. If you live in the coast it's impossible not to eat fish , people from the interior though never had the opportunity to include fish in their diets (far from the sea, no big rivers except shabelle and Juba) and may still have some aversion to it
That's why I said 90% of Somalis. There were some Somalis who made their lives from the sea including Reer Zeyla, as I have demonstrated in another thread Reer Zeyla or Awdal being the offspring of Arab fathers and Somali mothers, were similar to the Reer Xamar of Mogadishu. The pure Somali residents of Zeyla didn't touch fish. The situation was similar to this in Mogadishu whilst the various groups of Reer Xamars ate fish, Abgaal and other pure Somali residents of the town never touched it.

As you can see from this screenshot, Abgaal Sultan of Mogadishu refused to enter the house of Reer Maanyo because they eat fish.

Here is the mosque of Reer Maanyo in Hobyo, Imagine these people were not allowed to enter public Masjids because of their occupation.

In regard to the old somali cultural abstinence of eating chickens or birds here is a 700 year old
account form a man called al-zaylaci from bilad al-zaylac. A well known sheikh in the islamic
world cause of his valuable and timeless work, his magnum opus book called نصب الراية لأحاديث الهداية well known and frequently sited in the islamic world.

He said describing the people of bilad al zaylac.

And they have domesticated chickens which they don't have any desire of eating it out of disgust of what these animals eat from trash to filth.

Here is other stuff al-zaylaci wrote of bilad al-zaylac.

And it's a hot country not temperate, and the color of it's people is closer to yellowish and their hair isn't kinky like the kingdom of mali and it's vicinity of the western maghrib (meaning west africa).

their comprehension is quick and their fitra is greater, and they have zuhaad (meaning people who don't value the dunia) and al-abrar (meaning people who do good for others and treat them very well for example barri waliden)

and these country are what people in misr and al-sham call bilad al-zaylac and zaylac is but one village on the ocean from many other villages and an island from many other of it's islands, and their houses are made out of clay, stone and wood with it's roofs being trusses and domes ( literally carish and aqal somali).

I knew you would start with this Zeila wasn't Somali thing. Reer Zeila were certainly more multicultural than the average Somali city because of trade but nevertheless it was a somali city. Where are Al the Arab families in Awdal ? We have somalis with clear foreign origins all over the country (reer Xamar, Arab Salah etc) but somehow zero in Awdal. Where did these Arab go? Simply they were never a significant minority like in Xamar or Barawe.
Coming back to the fish stuff , Somalis also despised agriculture, it doesn't mean they never practiced it but simply that they disliked it. Even today somalia eat fish but the selling and fishing in Xamar is mostly done by minorities

@Hamzza this interesting quote reinforces the Somali nature of Zeila . People avoiding chicken and living in aqals. The color thing is a a distinction from the darker skinned Africans. Ibn battuta though (who was likely white/light skinned) called the people of Zeila "black".

Anyway today somalis in coastal towns have zero problem with fish. We should establish when exactly somalis started eating it

Zeila was like Xamar sxb.

The town of Zayla (or Audal, as it is more usually called locally) is inhabited by three classes: (1) The original inhabitants of the town, who are called "Rer Audal," (2) Eesa Somál, (3) Gadabtúsi Somál.

The Rer Audal are a community of half-castes, the offspring of Arab settlers who have intermarried with Somáli, Habshi, or Dankali women. They speak both Arabic and Somáli, but generally prefer the latter.

As for the whereabouts of reer Awdal today, maybe they left for Yemen as Zeyla had long connections with Yemen before.

Somalis in the arid north despising farming is understandable considering how there are a lot of difficulties in obtaining water and the soil being salty, but not fishing when there is drought and the sea is out there is pure retardation bro.

Anyway, it seems we agree on the main Somali clans starting to fish recently. Plus, the ancient demographics of Zeyla is irrelevant to this topic, so let's end it here.

Yh probably more of a thing with nomads, city people have no issue with eating fish, forbidding fish sounds so stupid, especially when we're blessed with a great long coast.
